There are differences in the voltage-current properties of a BD laser and CD-R laser. Because a BD laser has a shorter wavelength, the energy per photon is greater. This means that the drive voltage and power consumption are higher than for a CD-R laser.

Creating a Triple-Wavelength Laser

By using a triple-wavelength laser, it is possible to simplify the optical pickup in the optical systems. The advantages include a reduction in the number of parts required, and in the number of assembly and manufacturing processes involved. However, the lasers used in CDs, DVDs, and BDs are all made from different materials, and the development of a simple three-in-one device was thought to be impossible.

The impossible was made possible through technology used in PlayStation 2. Sony had already succeeded in developing a hybrid CD/DVD pickup for PlayStation 2 and was able to apply this technology to the creation of a triple-wavelength pickup. It did this by fabricating a substrate with a BD GaN laser chip and mounting a hybrid CD/DVD chip on top. The excellent thermal conductivity of the BD GaN substrate ensures efficient removal of heat generated by the hybrid CD/DVD chip.

PLAYSTATION 3 was designed to accommodate three totally different optical disc standards—CD, DVD and BD—in a single unit. As a game console that also functions as a next-generation HD player, PLAYSTATION 3 has taken the market by storm.

The evolution of optical discs as media for the storage of video has advanced from the CD to the DVD, and now from the DVD to the BD. The development of semiconductor lasers has been a major factor in this evolution.

With the emergence of the blue-violet laser, the development of lasers with shorter wavelengths appears to have reached a plateau. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is often considered the more technical part of marketing. This is because SEO helps in promoting the sites and at the same time requires some technical knowledge - at least familiarity with basic HTML. SEO is sometimes also called SEO copyright, as most of the techniques that are used to promote sites on search engines with text. Generally, SEO can be defined as the activity of optimizing Web pages or entire sites to make them more search engine friendly, achieving high positions in search results.

One of the basic truths in SEO is that even if all the things that are needed to do, this will not automatically ensure top ratings but if you neglect basic rules, this will certainly not go unnoticed. Also, if you set realistic goals - ie to enter the top 30 Google results for a particular keyword, rather than being number one in 5 words, 10 search engines, you will feel happier and more satisfied with their results.

Although SEO helps to increase traffic to your website, SEO is not advertising. Multiple OEM manufacturers have already jumped onboard it seems, and are prepping a netbook Chrome OS marriage sometime in the second half of 2010. Applications

Application Framework

Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. Android Runtime

Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.

Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included "dx" tool.

The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

Linux Kernel

Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.

Latest technology: Toyota develops mind controlled wheelchair

The clever Japanese researchers at the Brain Science Institute (BSI) Toyota Collaboration Center have done something quite incredible once again. Using a wheelchair controlled by brain waves measured using EEG, it’s basically a system that will control the ride using brain waves analysed every 125 milliseconds; therefore the name “mind controlled wheelchair”.

As you will see in the video to follow, testers using the wheelchair and the EEG cap system have achieved accuracy of up to 95% which is not a bad figure considering a high tech wheelchair like this may be used in place of current manual wheelchairs for patients who have had strokes or other significant mobility impairments.

The BSI-TOYOTA Collaboration Center (BTCC; Hidenori Kimura, Director), has succeeded in developing a system which utilizes one of the fastest technologies in the world, controlling a wheelchair using brain waves in as little as 125 milliseconds (one millisecond, or ms, is equal to 1/1000 seconds). BTCC was established in 2007 by RIKEN, an independent administrative institution (Ryoji Noyori, President), as a collaborative project with Toyota Motor Corporation (Akio Toyoda, President), Toyota Central R&D Labs, Inc. (Takashi Saito, President), and Genesis Research Institute, Inc. (Kiyoshi Nakanishi, Representative Director of Research). Also collaborating in the research were Andrzej Cichocki, Unit Leader, and Kyuwan Choi, Research Scientist, of BTCC’s Noninvasive BMI Unit.

Recently technological developments in the area of brain machine interface (BMI) have received much attention. Such systems allow elderly or handicapped people to interact with the world through signals from their brains, without having to give voice commands.

BTCC’s new system fuses RIKEN’s blind signal separation¹ and space-time-frequency filtering² technology to allow brain-wave analysis in as little as 125 ms, as compared to several seconds required by conventional methods. Brain-wave analysis results are displayed on a panel so quickly that drivers do not sense any delay. The system has the capacity to adjust itself to the characteristics of each individual driver, and thereby is able to improve the efficiency with which it senses the driver’s commands. Thus the driver is able to get the system to learn his/her commands (forward/right/left) quickly and efficiently. The new system has succeeded in having drivers correctly give commands to their wheelchairs. An accuracy rate of 95% was achieved, one of the highest in the world.

Plans are underway to utilize this technology in a wide range of applications centered on medicine and nursing care management. R&D under consideration includes increasing the number of commands given and developing more efficient dry electrodes. So far the research has centered on brain waves related to imaginary hand and foot control. However, through further measurement and analysis it is anticipated that this system may be applied to other types of brain waves generated by various mental states and emotions.

iPhone 3.0 has settled in quite well in my view and I am sure many have been more than pleased to see Apple finally give the iPhone features such as copy and paste, MMS, landscape mode typing, Spotlight search, push notifications and many more. But did you know that actually there are some “hidden” functions that weren’t announced?

You may have figured out some of them yourself already but there are actually quite a few of them. I wouldn’t like to call this a secret but rather just tips and tricks to using the new iPhone OS 3.0. Check out the full list after the break…

1. You can now have 11 home screens instead of the previous limit of 9 home screens. So you can now launch 32 more iPhone apps from your iPhone’s home screen.

2. Thanks to Spotlight for iPhone, there is no limit on the number of iPhone apps that can be installed on the iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0 assumming that you have the required storage space on your iPhone. If you install more applications then the home screen icon limit, you can now access them using Spotlight.

3. This hidden feature addresses one of the minor annoyance in previous iPhone OS. When a phone call interrupts you, after the phone call you are taken back to the iPhone app you were using before you were interrupted.

4. iPhone’s virtual keyboard has also been updated with few more extra special characters while holding certain characters down similar to the “.com” button. In iPhone OS 3.0, when you hold down the “.” you also get “…”. The dash “-” also displays an em-dash “-” and quotations and apostrophes display “<<” and “>>” and can also be curved.

5. Along with Spotlight, Apple has also added Camera app to the Home button settings (Settings > General > Home Button) in iPhone fimrware 3.0 so if the Camera application is your favorite iPhone; you can quickly launch it from your iPhone’s home screen or any other iPhone app by double-clicking on the Home button.

6. You now have another option to force quit an unresponsive iPhone app. You can hold the sleep/wake button until the red slider appears, then press and hold down the home button to quit the iPhone app.

7. You can undo typing by shaking the iPhone. When you are in the Mail, Messaging, Safari or Notes applications, after you typed a word/several words, just shake the phone and a pop-up will appear, asking you whether you want to undo what you have just entered.

Firefox 3.5: Pasts one million downloads, almost 100 per second!

Firefox 3.5 is shaping up to be one of the most successful Firefox releases to date. Its been reported that the fastest Firefox yet has already been download more than one million times (within a matter of hours and counting!) with downloads almost hitting 100 per second, that’s quite something.

HTC Hero - first Android phone with flash support

The first Android phone with flash support has been unveiled. A true iPhone killer this time? Known as the HTC Hero, it is a phone which has been speculated with images leaked previously, now officially revealed and pictured below.

The new open source Android based HTC Hero sports a 3.2-inch HVGA (480×320) screen, a five megapixel camera with autofocus, AGPS, digital compass, gravity sensor, 3.5mm headphone jack and a dedicated search button. On the inside lies 512MB of storage, expandable by microSD, 288MB of RAM, and a 528MHz Qualcomm processor.

The Hero will be available later this summer in Europe in July and Asia later in the summer, but won’t be available to the US until some point later this year.

Cideko wireless media keyboard

Are you the type of computer user who doesn’t really get up to much typing and instead use your computer mainly for entertainment purposes? If that is you, then you might be interested in this new wireless keyboard by Cideko that’s aimed at the so-called media keyboards niche.

While there isn’t yet any official info with regards to specs or pricing, it looks from the pictures a rather small keyboard set. What’s special is that the new Cideko wireless media keyboard also sports a mouse that you can operate in mid air, Cideko are quite good at making odd things happen.

Though we don’t think this new style of mouse in the air will be very practical, it will be interesting to see how this tiny but full QWERTY keyboard performs, the buttons look pretty small but its mobility will certainly be an advantage.

Joystick for Mobile Phone Games

One of the biggest barriers for wide adoption of mobile games is that a cell phone directional pad is often not suited for gaming. But Zeemote Inc. is trying to solve that with its remote joystick called the Zeemote JS1.

The wireless controller, about the size of two lighters, connects to a phone via bluetooth and offers a user a full thumb joystick and two main buttons. It doesn't matter if you're left or right-handed, the thing works fine in either case.
Zeemote is offering a software developer kit that allows game designers to easily integrate the Zeemote into their games. Sega, Eidos and Fishlabs are among the publishers who have signed on to produce games that work with the Zeemote.
You can play flying or racing games with the joystick and it's apparently very easy to move around. Try doing the same thing on a regular cell phone and its frustrating and not very fulfilling.

The cool thing is you can have two players play one game simultaneously if you like. Fergus McNeill, CEO of Finblade, showed me a mobile tennis game they have that allows two players to compete. Before the Zeemote you could never really do this using just one phone. If you want you can also have one player play with a Zeemote and the other play with the directional pad.

Pricing is still up in the air though Zeemote executives say they will keep it below $US50 for a stand alone purchase. It will launch in June this year and will likely be bundled with a phone and several games.

Samsung LD220 - world’s first USB monitor

You would think these would be available by now wouldn’t you? Nope, this is actually the world’s first. This latest gadget, the Samsung LD220 USB monitor has been unveiled at the World IT Show 2009 in Korea. Dedicated for quick plug and play use with laptops and netbooks, the LD220 provides a brightness level of 300cd/m2, a contrast ratio of 30,000:1 and a response speed of 5ms.

Pricing details are yet to be revealed, but the LD220 will certainly not be world’s only USB monitor for very long, these gadgets should become much more popular as time comes as they are definitely very convenient to have.

I find this feature annoying sometimes, I haven’t seen any option to disable this. But one way to go around is to Start the im windows minimized so you can still stay invisible without your control in the new window.

Sony announces new PS3 motion controller

Sony just announced the rumered new motion controller for the PS3 -- the prototype looks like a wand with a color-changing ball on top. It's designed to work in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye, with the wand overlaid on-screen with a weapon or tool. Unlike Microsoft's Project Natal, Sony says they've learned "some experiences need buttons," which is why there's still a controller involved. The system is said to be "sub-millimeter" precise, and it was demoed drawing and playing a shooter -- it's sort of the middle ground between Natal and Wii Motion Plus. Sony says it'll launch in the spring of 2010, but we don't know what pricing will be like yet.

Asus Ecobook Bamboo Laptop

ASUS may have been beaten to the punch by a few other companies and their bamboo-ensconced offerings, but it looks like it's now getting its first bamboo laptop out the door at long last, and it's taken the opportunity to finally get official with a price. Apparently, the first few 12-inch models will go on sale at Taiwan's IT Month exhibition on Saturday, where they'll run NT$59,900, or just over $1,800. Unfortunately, it's not clear exactly which configuration that'll get you, but, judging from the last word out of ASUS, even the base config seems to be pretty capable.

We have an Asus notebook, and like their modular design where you can pick your own CPU and hard drive and assemble it yourself; ours had a tragic fall last week but it was easy to swap out busted parts. Asus also tries to differentiate itself from the others by doing silly things, like a leather notebook, or very sensible things, like the new Ecobook. Its case is covered in bamboo, which I suppose is a statement, but the real show is inside. All of the plastic in it is labeled and recyclable; it is lined with cardboard; there are no paints, sprays or even electroplating used on its components. It looks like it is designed to be easily taken apart for self-service and easy upgrading of components, usually the downfall of notebooks.

Crunchpad prototype looks dreams come true

TechCrunch just posted an update regarding their CrunchPad project. And there’s a ‘launch prototype’, which I assume is somewhat like a ‘release client’ in software development. Feature complete and ready for a last round of testing. The new renderings look even slicker than before, and there’s a nice video of the previous prototype in action that hints at what the software is going to be like. I just knew these prototypes were further along than they’d have us believe back then.

I can’t help but feel excited about this project. Tablet PCs failed miserably (as a consumer product) when they were introduced years ago, but this looks like a different approach altogether. It’s the netbook of tablets, and I love how they had the guts have it boot straight into a browser. This is purely a web browsing device.

Too bad the video also confirms my fears about Flash performance. The YouTube clip they play back at full screen is choppy as hell. Makes you wonder why they put that in the demo video. This is an issue that TechCrunch won’t be able to fix, unless Adobe steps in and gets Flash up to speed on Linux.

Still no release date, but there will be a press event in July. Let’s hope they’ll start selling the next day

SFR Hubster WiFi home internet tablet

With rival carrier Orange France rocking their Tabbee WiFi tablet, SFR are retaliating with a compact companion device of their own. The SFR Hubster is currently in trials across France, offering a compact touchscreen, streaming photos, music and video, together with internet access over WiFi or a wired ethernet connection.

Other features include a voice recorder that’s linked into the Hubster’s timer; after recording a message you can program in a time for it to be replayed. Podcasts, MP3 files or the radio can also be used as alarms, and there seems to be TV support though it’s unclear whether this is streaming over the internet connection or from an actual TV tuner; the former seems more likely.

Onboard storage is courtesy of SD/SDHC/MMC cards, and the Hubster is happy with MP3, WAV, WMA and RA audio files, and FLV and MP4 video files. The SFR Hubster will go on sale in France from June 15th, priced at €129 ($182).

The SFR Hubster has entered into the trial period throughout France in an effort to capture market share from Orange France.

As anticipated, the Hubster tablet includes a touchscreen display and offers the user the ability to stream digital video, audio and pictures across the home network by either a wired network connection or a WiFi connection.

The tablet supports voice reminders (or digital memos) as the onboard voice recorder has the ability to capture audio that can then be played back at a designated time using the Hubster playback feature.

Support for streaming TV is also included. Although details are sketchy, it appears this will be streaming internet TV as opposed to streaming through a TV tuner card.

The Hubster will accept SD, SDHC and MMC cards and supports MP3, WAV, WMA and RA audio files and FLV and MP4 video files. Expect to see the Hubster in stores on June 15th for $182.

Color-changing objects possible with chLCD

Now this is pretty cool. Apparently, gadgets that can change their color just by pressing a button are on the horizon for tech geeks everywhere. Yes, that means you can make your handheld any color you want on the go. Can you sense the anticipation?

By utilizing cholesteric liquid crystal display technology, or chLCD, gadgets will be able to change color automatically. These special displays have been modified to wrap around any object–a cell phone in this case.

By using three layers of red, green and blue chLCD, the device can be wrapped in the displays with resin in between each layer. This makes them strong and impervious to breakage. Then, all you do is press a button and a electric current changes the color of the screens. The color stays the same–even when the device is powered off–until you press the button again. Apparently, displays capable of up to 4,000 colors will be made in the future by Kent Displays. It remains to be seen if this tech will be used in next-gen devices, but we don’t see why not.

The new Asus Eee PC-in-a-Keyboard is exactly what it sounds like, an entire PC fitted inside of a keyboard. It also has a small touchscreen display in place of the number pad on the right.

Featuring wireless HDMI, it's a "fully functional PC" with full QWERTY and a mini secondary touchscreen.

Asus was vague as to if/when we'll actually see the Eee Keyboard come to market (though we're pretty sure it's a semi-real product), but it's a fantastic concept for a home theater PC if we've ever seen one. ASUS are planning two versions of the ASUS Eee PC Keyboard, one using wired HDMI and the other featuring Wireless HDMI, according to company chairman Jonney Shih. The ASUS Eee PC Keyboard - which builds an Intel-powered nettop into a QWERTY keyboard, along with a 5-inch touchscreen, and is intended for multimedia use - is on target for a Q2 2009 launch, with Shih suggesting June was most likely.

The mechanical structure of a robot must be controlled to perform tasks. The control of a robot involves three distinct phases - perception, processing, and action (robotic paradigms). Sensors give information about the environment or the robot itself (e.g. the position of its joints or its end effector). This information is then processed to calculate the appropriate signals to the actuators (motors) which move the mechanical.

The processing phase can range in complexity. At a reactive level, it may translate raw sensor information directly into actuator commands. Sensor fusion may first be used to estimate parameters of interest (e.g. the position of the robot's gripper) from noisy sensor data. An immediate task (such as moving the gripper in a certain direction) is inferred from these estimates. Techniques from control theory convert the task into commands that drive the actuators.
At longer time scales or with more sophisticated tasks, the robot may need to build and reason with a "cognitive" model. Cognitive models try to represent the robot, the world, and how they interact. Pattern recognition and computer vision can be used to track objects. Mapping techniques can be used to build maps of the world. Finally, motion planning and other artificial intelligence techniques may be used to figure out how to act. For example, a planner may figure out how to achieve a task without hitting obstacles, falling over, etc.

Control systems may also have varying levels of autonomy. Direct interaction is used for haptic or tele-operated devices, and the human has nearly complete control over the robot's motion. Operator-assist modes have the operator commanding medium-to-high-level tasks, with the robot automatically figuring out how to achieve them. An autonomous robot may go for extended periods of time without human interaction. Higher levels of autonomy do not necessarily require more complex cognitive capabilities. For example, robots in assembly plants are completely autonomous, but operate in a fixed pattern.

Although this custom may offend one's egalitarian sensibility, it makes sense from an economic perspective. Emergent technology is usually created on a limited scale, not in mass production. So it follows that because this technology is rare, it should be more expensive. Once it's found on widely produced automobiles, the cost for high-end technology will decrease.

But for a luxury car to be a luxury car, its features have to stay ahead of the innovative curve. So to get an idea of what lays in store for luxury cars, we have to gaze into the crystal ball that is the concept car. A concept car is one that's not yet in production -- and may never make it there. Instead, concept cars often represent the cutting edge of technology and design. In many cases, the technology found aboard concept cars will be stripped for parts. Some aspects will be discarded; some will be used in mass-produced automobiles. If the concept cars emerging from designers' minds these days are any indication of what "luxury" will mean in 2030, then future car buyers have a lot to look forward to.

Meeting the world's growing demand for energy, minimizing related impacts on the environment and reducing the potential geopolitical tensions associated with increased competition for energy supplies represent some of the grandest technical and policy challenges of the next several decades.

Maximizing current sources of energy through increased supply and more efficient technologies, enhancing security of supply and minimizing environmental impacts are critical and will require new and innovative approaches to the production, distribution and end use of conventional sources of energy as we transition to more sustainable energy supplies.

Fossil fuels currently supply more than 80 percent of the world's primary energy, but they are finite resources and major contributors to global climate change. The ways and means for their ultimate replacement with clean, affordable and sustainable energy sources at the scale required to power the world are not yet fully obvious, readily available or, in many instances, even technically feasible.

Nuclear power, while a conventional source of energy, represents a possible option for meeting long-term future energy needs on a large scale if technical and policy issues can be resolved. In addition, existing energy infrastructures in the United States and around the world are complex and very large, represent enormous capital investment and have operational life spans of 50 years or more. Wholesale or even piecemeal replacement of these infrastructures will be costly and will take decades.

During this transition period, it is essential that we base our energy policy, regulation and diplomatic decisions and actions on the strongest, most informed scientific, economic and social analyses possible. The goal is to:

maximize our current energy resources by developing new supplies and using conventional energy more efficiently
mitigate the environmental impacts associated with fossil fuel consumption
optimize the investment of scarce research dollars
minimize potential economic dislocation during the transition to a sustainable energy future
preserve the fundamental and desirable drivers and aspects of free markets by internalizing public goods such as enhanced security and environmental stewardship.

Are Hackers Working For The Mob ?

Hackers stole more data last year than in the previous four years, according to new research.
In its 2009 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR), Verizon investigated 90 data breach cases that exposed a 285 million records, which is equivalent to nine records per second. This figure is far greater than the 230 million records recorded as breached in the five years combined from 2004 to 2008.

The study looked only at breaches involving attacks that resulted in compromised records being used in a crime. Verizon Business found that organised crime was behind 90 percent of all breaches which involved compromised records.

Market saturation has driven down the price of credit card details on the black market. Details that were valued at around $10 to $16 per record in mid-2007, are now sold for less than 50 cents per record today.
As a result, personal identification numbers (PIN) fraud has exploded as criminals are targeting financial firms to steal PINs and together with associated credit and debit accounts. Financial firms accounted for 93 percent of the over 285 million records compromised.

"Financial services firms were singled out and fell victim to some very determined, very sophisticated, and--unfortunately--very successful attacks in 2008," said the report.
The report also found most data breaches originate from external threats, rather than internal, with 74 percent of breaches caused by external sources.
Hacking is the leading cause of data breaches for the fifth year running, involved in 94% of cases that led to breached records. Malware was involved in over one-third of the cases investigated and contributed to nine out of 10 of all records breached. SQL injection was the favourite type of attack, used in 79% of cases were records were compromised.
But most breaches resulted from a combination of events rather than a single action, the report found, with 64 percent of breaches attributable to hackers using a combination of methods.
Matthijs van der Wel, manager principal forensics EMEA, at Verizon Business Security Solutions, outlined the typical scenario for data losses. "The end user makes a mistake. The attacker takes advantage of some mistake committed by the victim company, hacks into the network, perhaps using an SQL injection attack, and installs malware on a system to collect data."

For the first time, MIT researchers have shown they can genetically engineer viruses to build both the positively and negatively charged ends of a lithium-ion battery.

The battery that Belcher and her colleagues developed using bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria but are harmless to humans.

The new virus-produced batteries have the same energy capacity and power performance as state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries being considered to power plug-in hybrid cars, and they could also be used to power a range of personal electronic devices, said Angela Belcher, the MIT materials scientist who led the research team.

The new batteries, described in the April 2 online edition of Science, could be manufactured with a cheap and environmentally benign process: The synthesis takes place at and below room temperature and requires no harmful organic solvents, and the materials that go into the battery are non-toxic.

In a traditional lithium-ion battery, lithium ions flow between a negatively charged anode, usually graphite, and the positively charged cathode, usually cobalt oxide or lithium iron phosphate. Three years ago, an MIT team led by Belcher reported that it had engineered viruses that could build an anode by coating themselves with cobalt oxide and gold and self-assembling to form a nanowire.

In the latest work, the team focused on building a highly powerful cathode to pair up with the anode, said Belcher, the Germeshausen Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Biological Engineering. Cathodes are more difficult to build than anodes because they must be highly conducting to be a fast electrode; however, most candidate materials for cathodes are highly insulating (non-conductive).

To achieve that, the researchers, including MIT Professor Gerbrand Ceder of materials science and Associate Professor Michael Strano of chemical engineering, genetically engineered viruses that first coat themselves with iron phosphate, then grab hold of carbon nanotubes to create a network of highly conductive material.

Because the viruses recognize and bind specifically to certain materials (carbon nanotubes in this case), each iron phosphate nanowire can be electrically “wired” to conducting carbon nanotube networks. Electrons can travel along the carbon nanotube networks, percolating throughout the electrodes to the iron phosphate and transferring energy in a very short time.

The viruses are a common bacteriophage, which infect bacteria but are harmless to humans.

The viruses are genetically programmed to first grow the iron phosphate battery electrode material, then pick up an individual or bundle of carbon nanotubes. These nanotubes wire the electrode for fast energy transfer and high power.

The team found that incorporating carbon nanotubes increases the cathode’s conductivity without adding too much weight to the battery. In lab tests, batteries with the new cathode material could be charged and discharged at least 100 times without losing any capacitance. That is fewer charge cycles than currently available lithium-ion batteries, but “we expect them to be able to go much longer,” Belcher said.

The prototype is packaged as a typical coin cell battery, but the technology allows for the assembly of very lightweight, flexible, and conformable batteries that can take the shape of their container.

Last week, MIT President Susan Hockfield took the prototype battery to a press briefing at the White House where she and U.S. President Barack Obama spoke about the need for federal funding to advance new clean-energy technologies.

Now that the researchers have demonstrated they can wire virus batteries at the nanoscale, they intend to pursue even better batteries using materials with higher voltage and capacitance, such as manganese phosphate and nickel phosphate, said Belcher. Once that next generation is ready, the technology could go into commercial production, she said.

Lead authors of the Science paper are Yun Jung Lee and Hyunjung Yi, graduate students in materials science and engineering. Other authors are Woo-Jae Kim, postdoctoral fellow in chemical engineering; Kisuk Kang, recent MIT PhD recipient in materials science and engineering; and Dong Soo Yun, research engineer in materials science and engineering.

Microsoft has released an almost final version of Vista Service Pack 2 to its testing community.

The release candidate of Vista SP2 is not yet publicly available, but judging by past releases you may not have to wait too long before the official update ships.

Microsoft released the beta version of SP2 to its testing community in late October, and made SP2 beta publicly available in early December.

Then the update seemed to suffer some setbacks when, in late January, reports surfaced that Microsoft wouldn’t be coming out with a release candidate of SP2 until at least March. A week later, however, Redmond surprised the tech world by releasing the updated service pack to a select group of testers. Now Microsoft’s significantly larger testing pool reportedly has the near-final version of SP2. Judging by the timeline from SP2 beta, a final version could be ready to go within in the next 4 to 6 weeks; however, the Malaysian blog TechARP, which has been right about Microsoft timetables before, believes Vista SP2 will start shipping around April or May of this year.

Vista SP2 is largely about improving performance, and in addition to the contents of Vista SP1, the new update includes 691 hotfixes, significant performance improvements and a Service Pack clean up tool that will recover some hard disk space used by previous Vista updates.

Backup is one of those things that we rarely think about until it is far too late. It’s usually a task that’s somewhere buried on your to-do list. It may even be a high priority task on your list, but somehow weeks and months pass and still, no backup. Could it be because too much pain is associated with the process? Or maybe it’s just being a bit lazy? Or more likely, we are all too busy and just don’t make the time.
Here, we take a look at some of the painful aspects of backing up our PCs and laptops and how we can easily overcome that pain to make sure we don’t end up losing our valuable data.
Method
The first issue is determining how you will back up your data. Online? Off site? Off line? All of the above? And within each of those options are again many other options! First, here’s the bad news; you really should be doing all of the above. Three times the work you say! Not quite. Fortunately, with a little initial investment in time and money, you can setup these solutions relatively painlessly with the result being safe, secure data.

You can back up off site two ways:

1) Use a web-based service provider or

2) use a portable backup drive and physically move it off site. We recommend option 1, because it will save more of your time; however, if you prefer more control of your data and don’t mind the extra time involved, option 2 works just fine.
Since external drives are inexpensive, it’s also a good idea to maintain an on-site backup, giving you the advantage of speedy recovery when data is lost. While you can back up to a USB or FireWire hard drive attached to one of your PCs, a much more convenient solution is a network storage device, often referred to as Network Attached Storage (NAS).
A NAS, like Western Digital’s My Book World Edition, connects directly to your home network and allows for easy backup of any computer connected to the network.
Time

Now that you have your backup method ready to go, how to remember to back up? You have two options:

1) Setup an annoying reminder to tell you to back up every few hours or

2) automate it and forget it. You can guess that we prefer option 2.
Most on-line services will have this feature available, but you have to be connected to the Internet for it to work, and it can be slow. That is why we like the NAS solution so much. Devices like WD’s My Book World Edition backs up your systems as soon as you connect to your home network, even if you have no Internet access. With this particular product, you don’t have to remember anything – it backs up automatically every time you save a file.
What Do You Hate About Backing Up Your Data?
Now that you have automated the procedure, time no longer becomes an issue. That said, it’s a good idea to periodically check your back ups to make sure your data is indeed being backed up.

It appears that not only is coffee good to the last drop, but the dregs are now good for printing a document. Yes, someone has actually invented a printer that uses old coffee grounds as ink, and to make it even more interesting, the printer does not even require electricity.

This coffee and manually powered printer was not entirely the product of pure inspiration, but it is an entry in the Greener Gadgets competition. The RITI printer is designed by Joen Hwan Ju, and it has generated a lot of buzz on the gadget blogosphere. In fact, I’m surprised that someone on this blog hasn’t covered this already.

In case you haven’t heard how the RITI printer works, you have to place the remnants of your wet and dirty coffee filter inside an ink cartridge with some water. Then you manually move the cartridge back and forth and it will mark up the paper. The cartridge can be easily emptied by throwing the twice-used grounds into a compost bin.

Image Search With BING & GOOGLE

If you are among those who have been depending mainly on Google Image Search for the pictures to be inserted in your slide shows, blogs, etc., things won’t be the same after you have completed reading this article.

Since Bing was launched on 1st of this month, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding it and its threat to Google. Well, let’s see where Bing’s Image Search stands in comparison to Google Image Search.

Let’s see the differences under the following criteria:

1. Search Accuracy

Basis: The relevance to the searched term and the quality of the first 15 images returned by both the search engines.

While Google was good as ever, Bing was right on target almost every time, as in to exclaim: BINGO!! That’s what I was looking for. (In fact, I gave Bing Image search a try only when simple search terms like - ‘follow on Facebook and ‘hello’ forced me to go to the 3rd page of Google Images.)

2. User Interface

Basis: Ease of use, including that of the additional image sorting options.

Google’s additional image sorting options on the top bar aren’t that obvious. On the other hand, Bing has dedicated a full left column to it, leave apart its elegant look and “show similar images” option below every image on hovering.

Moreover, when it comes to pagination, Bing Image Search has none !! Surprised? You just need to keep scrolling down till you find what you want. That reduces search time drastically.

3. Image sorting options

This is one field where Bing has clearly surpassed Google. The “Show similar Images” option below every image on hovering works like a charm. Its other options like: sort by Size, Layout, Color, Style, People appears to be more efficient and useful than the fewer: sort by size, content and color options provided by Google.

Moreover, Bing offers 4 Image viewing options: ” Zoom Small, Medium, Large and Show Image details” (top right corner).

Even while viewing a particular image in Bing, you can see the related images displayed in the left column giving a Youtube like feel for Images.

Conclusion

Though in some aspects, like searching for clip arts and line drawings, Google image search is still unique, its very evident that Bing has done its homework really well. As far as Image search is concerned, Bing deserves a pat on the back for raising the bar.

With Google known for its simplicity and obsession for statistics rather than looks, its interesting to see how Microsoft has made a thorough analysis of all the possible weaknesses of Google Image Search and tried to overcome them in style. Lets see what changes Bing forces onto Google.

BING Becomes No:2 Search Engine

Microsoft changed the search engine strategy with in a day of its BING Release. Microsoft BING becomes the No: 2 in the search engine market.

Google Took nearly couple of years to become a hit in the Search engine market, YAHOO’s Search engine was at the top and ASK was the second in the search when Google made its entry. Within a couple of years Google went to the peak taking over all its Rivals like Yahoo, Ask, MSN … Till today Google is at the top in the search engine market. Please Note that Google took two years to become top in the table. But BING made the complete impact in the search engine world. Its ranked as No: 2 in the search engine market within a day of its beta version released. Just imagine what would be the impact if the full version is released.?

BING is a serious trouble for Yahoo, and Days are not far behind to take over the search engine market from Google.

If this is any indication of the trend to come in the search engine market, it looks like Yahoo might be in serious trouble while Google may be slightly threaten. Bing is still in preview mode and yet it has made a significant impact in the search market trend already, even if it was only for one day.

Data from StatCounter Global Stats showed that Bing has grabbed the second spot in search market share in both the U.S. and worldwide.

According to the StatCounter data analysis for search market share on June 4, Bing managed to get 16.8% share while Yahoo who remained at its average market share posted 10.22%. Google which remained at the number one spot posted a 71.47 share. This is bad news for Yahoo although Bing didn’t manage to snag some of its share but got it from Google instead.

Globally, Bing slightly edged out Yahoo with 5.62% and 5.13% market share respectively. Google retain its share with 87.62% share.

Although the data was only for a day, still it is significant enough as it is very rare that this things happen when it comes to search engine rankings. Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer can already deduct one day from the five year time period that he set as Bing’s target date to become the second biggest search engine. And Ballmer better hope that Bing would sustain this market share for a month. The good thing is that Bing is still in preview mode and yet it is already creating a mark.

It may still be too early to tell whether Bing could permanently overtake Yahoo. But the Yahoo search work better do something drastic to outwit Bing. Google has to count its days in the Top Position.

Windows 7 Binds Comfortably With Microsoft Surface

A couple weeks ago we got an early demo of the Surface SP1 update, and saw that one of the goals of which was to improve Windows-Surface cross-compatibility and encourage developers to make their apps touch-compatible. Looks like that work goes both ways, as it appears that Surface content and functionality is going to be kicking it with Windows 7.

Of course, the Surface’s hardware is mixed blessing: it makes development a lot easier when you’ve designed the hardware (just ask Apple), but makes it a pain when you’re trying to set your cool software up on similar but not identical platforms. Surface can handle a billion touches but the Dell Latitude used in this video demo (no offense, Dell) isn’t quite as capable, though of course it does everything it was designed to do.

It’s certainly not “OMG Surface on yr computer” but I’m looking forward to having lots of overlap between these two delicious Microsoft treats.

Google Latitude Helps To Publish Your Location To Gmail Chat And To Your Blog

The Google Public Location Badge lets you publish your Latitude location on your blog or website via your mobile phone. You can choose to show just the city that you are in or you can have your device’s location detected automatically, using GPS, Wi-Fi, or cell tower ID, which provides a more specific location. Here’s an example of what a badge looks like embedded in a blog. For your privacy, you may choose to share your best available location or share only your city-level location.

Before these apps, there was no way to broadcast your location to the public at large via Latitude, only to your own Gmail contacts through the Latitude feature. Google says that since Latitude’s launch, users expressed interest in sharing their location with people who are not their Latitude friends. The two apps rolled out today allow users to do this.

Google Talk location status automatically updates your Google Talk or Gmail chat status message with your Latitude location. The application will automatically update your status message to your current city as you move, and anyone who can chat with you will be able to see this location status. Your current city is shared with all of your Google Talk or Gmail Chat contacts even if you hide from certain “friends” in Google Latitude.
